I'm enjoying it so far! It does a decent job with translating.

It does have a fee per image translated, but it is probably cheaper than a subscription model translator for people that don't translate that many images per month. Gets cheaper if you buy the points in bulk. Right now the lowest costing option is 1,250 to 2,500 images for about $6 at the time of this review, depending on which translation model that you pick.

It's one of the few image translators for Firefox. Works on Firefox for Android! Most browser extension translators for images are on Google Chrome, but the official mobile Chrome app doesn't support extensions. I find that this extension is one of the better options out there thanks to how it's a bit more friendly for people like me who use both PC and Android.

Comes with some additional features that I don't see on all extensions. Things like matching the color of the translated text with the original text. If text is covering something, you are allowed to erase it.

The auto-translation feature doesn't carry over to new tabs and refrains from translating every tab that I have opened! Thanks for doing that! Many extensions disregard doing that and it matters a lot when we are on a point per image system.

One setting that I recommend disabling for moderate users is "Should Torii be enabled on every new page." The extension seems to do a good job of keeping track of websites you want to have the extension enabled on as it is. No need to have it enabled on all new tabs, unless you are browsing every webpage on a search engine.

Edit (1/27/25): I'll add some feedback. Something people might not like is the user interface. I kind of wish that there were more settings options for the UI to personalize it.

It's like a watermark that appears upon an image if you touch (mobile) or mouse-over (PC) said image. This means that on full-screen image websites, such as manga or comics, it can be present the whole time on such websites. A setting that might help with this is to let us adjust the opacity of the icon to our own preference for when there is no mouse-over/touch event to the icon directly. Out of sight, out of mind.

The current UI button also requires just one tap/click to start the translation. I think I might like an option to require a double tap/click to start a translation, to prevent my fat thumb from tapping it by mistake on mobile.

I'm writing this review after postponing it for a few months. I like the translations it offers. It's cheaper than others and provides usage proportional to what you pay. I bought a few golf balls and am using them. Even though free usage is limited, the prices are cheaper compared to a few others I've used, and it offers a wide range of languages. My only concern is privacy. Even if the developer says they don't store data, we can't be sure and have to trust them.

It works super well. I used to use Ichigo on Chrome before moving over to Firefox, but this one beats it in every single regard. Even the pricing is beyond reasonable.

Works wonderfully. However it's too expensive, and without localized pricing it becomes harder for non-Americans. The inpainting/rendering must be the most computationally intensive part. Why not just create text overlays using HTML & CSS tools instead? Just instead text boxes at the coordinates of the text and set its backdrop-filter to blur. At least consider that for a cheaper tier.

Thanks for the 4 stars! Localized pricing is impossible for the simple reason that my own expenses are not localized. Everything is in dollars, such as GPT4 or Gemini, or server prices, or storage, or hosting. If I were to localize I would be losing a ton of revenue and Torii would die, since that's not sustainable. As for your other point, the inpainting and rendering are by far not the most intensive or costly parts. The character detection via OCR AI models is the most costly, followed by translation via the services of GPT4 or Gemini. Therefor it cannot possibly be made any cheaper than it already is, until I find just as good but cheap replacement models for those services. That should happen in the not too distant future, as AI improves globally, but as of right now, the current pricing is as low as it can go.

Thanks anyway, for the review, I really appreciate it. Especially since I've usually received 1-star reviews of this kind, such as "This sucks, it's not free, 1 star" lol

So the firefox extension works very well on a couple of manga websites I tested.
The choice of LLMs has increased and the brand new 2.5 flash has been added!
For manga reading the 2.0 is more than enough but I think that adding the image context option helps a lot.

For those who leave low star reviews because it's paid, please take into account that nothing in this life is free. This extension, apart from coding the extension itself, requires a service that runs in the background, and API calls to the LLM providers. All of these cost money, and you have to have the actual skills to do it. Most of the "low star because it's paid" reviewers have absolutely no idea how stuff work, could never do it on their own, and still expect it to be free.

Please appreciate the effort that has gotten into this, the ongoing running costs, the ease of use that it provides, which would be unimaginable a few years ago and the really really low amount of money it requires from the end user.

Google lens might be "free", but even if we don't consider the inconvenience, it feeds on your data, so it's not really free. Nothing in life is free. Perhaps the air we breathe, but I have doubts.

Great work stringie! I'd give 6 stars if I could.

I really appreciate your kind review panos. Means a lot to me to hear something nice, haha. For a moment, there was a streak of bad reviews and I got worried. I don't know why people aren't more reasonable with their expectations. I guess everyone is annoyed that everything in their life wants their money, which I understand. Still, it's very disheartening to hear bad reviews after putting a whole year's worth of effort into improving Torii. Nonetheless, I'll keep improving Torii to make it the best on the internet and hopefully there will be people like yourself who appreciate it.

People who are writing poor reviews for something that requires payment for use are being quite inconsiderate of the developer. There are alternative addons that allow you to translate locally that are free... but this one provides translations using another method. This requires no knowledge of Python, hosting servers, or anything of the sort.

The translations are (usually) pretty good. The text is as impressive as a typical Google translate result... but what I'm more impressed about is it's ability to overlay the foreign text with the translated text. If you can afford 5 bucks for a good amount of translations... then I say it's worth the money.

I don't really understand those people expecting everything in this world to either be free or unusable. The good things in life more often than not provide some value which doesn't come for free. People's labor needs to be rewarded for providing you with that value. High quality products cost money and should be fairly priced.

Also, I would say that Torii's translations are 10x better than the typical google translate result, haha. The reason is that Google's models are inferior to the modern capabilities of LLMs like GPT4 and Gemini, which is what Torii uses.

Torii offers a free trial to test things. It says right on the install page that some features are paid. Why would you leave a bad review just because it's paid? I can't pay for your usage, that is ridiculous. GPT-4 costs money, servers cost money, Gemini costs money, OCR costs money ... who is gonna pay for all those expenses? For Torii to sustain itself, it has to be a paid extension. That doesn't make Torii worth 1-star reviews. You should rate the product and provide constructive criticism that matters so I can improve the extension. Do you rate Netflix 1-star because it's a paid subscription? No, businesses have to sustain themselves, otherwise they die and no one can use them. Please remove your review.

So, I liked this extension at first and wanted to give 4 stars because this button is always present in the image, overlapping it. But then I found an untranslated text. Then, at some point in time, the extension just ate up 2 trial translations, not translating in the end! What if I paid for this fake translation? Would anyone give me a refund? No, of course, this is an ordinary force majeure, you say! Well, the Internet connection may be poor or just the server froze for a moment... But I'm not happy with that, I'd rather spend time on a one-minute promotional video, although I'd be annoyed too, but it would still be cheaper. Therefore, I would rather stay on online translators, they work more stable and for free.

I'm sad to hear about your experience. Let me address your points:

The button appears on hover and after translations and is translucent. You can also turn it off entirely and translate your images with shortcuts, Torii will still work without the button. Also what would you prefer? No button? How would you like to translate images?

While untranslated text does happen sometimes, it's very rare. Regardless, machine translation is simply not perfect and OCR is a difficult problem in and of itself. Sometimes texts have a weird font or size and can't be detected.

As for the translation taking 2 credits and not finishing, that should never have happened and had you contacted me I would immediately refund you your credits if that were the case. I am very available for anyone to contact me and there are 300 members on my discord server where you can easily and instantly contact me.

I e also experimented with rewarded video ads as you suggest but it's really not easy to implement and I don't think it's worth it. Torii has 2000 happy paying customers who use the extension daily and they rarely have any problems. Torii makes 30,000 image translations per day.

In any case, there are many extensions similar to Torii but we are definitely the highest quality and most stable one. That's why I'm disappointed in your review. I don't think you can find a better machine translator service.

Official human translations are super costly and not free. Usually costing a few dollars per image which is crazy. With Torii tour can do thousands of images.

I wish you would revisit Torii and maybe come talk to me if there's anything wrong with it. Have a good one.

I'm giving this four-star rating review solely based upon the way the developer has given a (what appears to be) a direct & sincerely genuine real-life human response to the positive & negative user posted reviews. I haven't yet tried out the extension to give the actual product of topic a rated review. Which is honestly why I only gave 4-star and not a 5-star review🤷🏿‍♂️

The add-on is great. Exactly what I was looking for. Unfortunately, it's not free, and I can't justify the cost right now. However, if there were an option to watch an ad for 1–2 credits each time, I'd use it without hesitation and gladly leave a 5-star review.

I really hope you consider adding this feature. Keeping the subscription while offering an ad-based credit system would make this an absolute hit. Wishing you the best of luck with the add-on.

At first I gave it 3 stars but after a little reconsideration I changed it into a 4.

Thanks for the nice review. I gave the ad feature you propose some thought and I even tried implementing it but it turns out it's surprisingly hard to implement for websites. I wanted to make video ad rewards possible but for some reason I couldn't find an ad provider to do that. I might try again in the future though.

It's pretty good but sometimes a few characters slip through and end up not getting translated.

Unfortunately since I live in a third-world country I can't pay to use the extension because it's way too expensive where I live. Bummer. :/

Thanks for the nice review. Unfortunately, I can't localize the prices because they're not local for me either. Every tool and AI I'm using only works in USD in predetermined fixed prices. If I localize the Torii credits price, it will cost me out of my own pocket to pay for your usage and that is not sustainable.

Bro, what do you mean by a "weird login flow" ... it's literally just Firebase's standard Google Login. If you know what's messing with the login, then turn off your extension for a minute in order to login. No one else is having this problem. Why give 1 star if you haven't even made a translation attempt and tested the product. You can write to me on discord and we can figure it out.

How does it being paid make it deserve 1 star? You should rate the quality of the product or the service. I cannot provide this service for free because it costs money for me to run the servers and AI models and it wouldn't be sustainable if it wasn't paid.
